Background of the Study
Electoral violence is a pervasive challenge in Nigeria, undermining the democratic process, deterring voter participation, and perpetuating political instability. In Yabo Local Government Area (LGA) of Sokoto State, as in other regions, such violence disrupts the socio-political fabric, threatening peace and security. Advertising has emerged as a vital tool in raising awareness about the causes, consequences, and prevention of electoral violence.
Research indicates that targeted advertising campaigns can foster civic education, encourage peaceful participation, and highlight the importance of nonviolence in elections. For instance, Musa and Ahmed (2024) emphasized the impact of visual storytelling and culturally relevant messages in sensitizing communities to the dangers of electoral violence. This study evaluates the effectiveness of advertising in promoting awareness of electoral violence in Yabo LGA, examining how well-crafted campaigns can drive behavioral change and foster a peaceful electoral process.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite various initiatives to curb electoral violence in Yabo LGA, its prevalence remains a concern. The lack of comprehensive awareness campaigns and limited engagement with grassroots populations hinder efforts to address the issue effectively. Advertising campaigns often fail to resonate with local audiences due to generic messaging or inadequate reach.
As observed by Bello and Yusuf (2023), campaigns that neglect socio-cultural dynamics and fail to employ accessible media channels are less likely to create meaningful impact. This study investigates the gaps in current advertising strategies and evaluates their effectiveness in promoting awareness and reducing electoral violence in Yabo LGA.
